Why do it?

Whether you’re wanting to upskill your existing staff or take on a new employee, an Apprenticeship is the ideal way for you to develop your team and to grow your business.

They’re a form of work-related training where the individual works towards a qualification through a combination of on and off-the-job training.

In order to make Apprenticeships more appealing to businesses, the way they work has been massively overhauled and from April 2017, most of the eligibility criteria around age and prior qualifications has been axed. This means it’s easier than ever to use Apprenticeship-based training for a variety of different staff and job roles.

The government has also sought to develop new Apprenticeship ‘Standards’ with input from employers - working closely with them to decide on the key competencies needed to make the training a better fit for job roles in their sector.

Cost:

Apprenticeship costs are agreed between the employer and training provider, within banding limits set by the government

Employers with a payroll of more than £3 million can use their levy to pay for Apprenticeship training

SMEs will pay 10% of the Apprenticeship training costs

There are no training costs for apprentices 16-18 if the company has less than 50 employees

The costs of other training (regulatory courses, higher education degrees) varies according to the programme
